San Mateo-Santa Cruz El Niño Prepardness

Are You Prepared for the Winter Storm Season?Car in a flooded surburban area

With El Niño storms estimated to be their strongest in years, agencies throughout CZU are preparing for potential weather related issues. All of our personnel have received updated training in basic water rescue techniques and flood control tactics. We will continue to monitor weather conditions and preposition resources when appropriate. We ask that all citizens prepare as well. Here is some information that can help you:

Flooding can happen anytime and anywhere and can happen fast!

  • Be sure to be prepared by having an emergency plan.
  • Keep a minimum 3-day supply of nonperishable food and bottled water on hand.
  • Don't walk through a flooded area. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you off your feet.
  • Don't drive through a flooded area. A car can be carried away by just 2 feet of water.
  • Always check for structural damage before entering your home after a flood.
