CAL FIRE Humboldt - Del Norte Unit Administration

Chief McCray’s career with the Department began in 1987 as a seasonal firefighter at the Garberville Forest Fire Station in the Humboldt-Del Norte Unit.  He spent a total of six seasons as a seasonal firefighter including three seasons at Kneeland Helitack.  From 1993 to 2000, Chief McCray worked in the private timber industry of Humboldt County as a forester where he obtained his Registered Professional Forester License.  In 2000, Chief McCray returned to the Department as a Forester I in the Humboldt-Del Norte Unit.  Since then, Chief McCray has held the positions of Assistant Chief, Forester II, and Unit Forester.

Chief McCray served in multiple CAL FIRE cadres including Basic Forest Practice, Forest Practice Enforcement, and the Humboldt-Del Norte Unit’s C-212 Chainsaw Training Program.  He served on the Humboldt County Fire/Arson Investigation Unit and currently serves CAL FIRE as an Agency Representative, Public Information Officer, as well as a variety of ICS operational positions.  Additionally, for the past two years he has served on the Humboldt County Forest Review Committee, an advisory board to the Humboldt County Planning Commission.  His experience in the private timber industry as well as the Department provides him a well-grounded basis for the leadership and vision of the Humboldt-Del Norte Unit.
