Air Operations Officer II

Air Operations Officers II perform work in CAL FIRE’s Aviation Management Program involving assigned study projects and the preparation of recommendations on use of specialized aircraft, modifications of aircraft, maintenance of adequate air base facilities, and development of methods and procedures for air operations.

An Air Operations Officer II is responsible for:

  • Inspection of aircraft and air base facilities
  • Performing proficiency qualification and safety checkouts for pilots
  • Supervising air attack training programs
  • Evaluating effectiveness for specific elements of air operations
  • Acquiring aircraft parts, components, and systems for state-owned aircraft
  • Assuring contract compliance by contractors

Knowledge

Must possess knowledge equivalent to the Air Operations I position plus:

  • Knowledge of types of aircraft and their performance capabilities
  • Flight characteristics
  • Capacity for specialized modifications and adaptability for CAL FIRE use
  • Principles and practices of employee training, including determining training needs and evaluating results of training given
  • Contract administration

Abilities

Must possess abilities equivalent to the Air Operations I position plus:

  • Ability to make inspections and appraisals of aircraft and pilots
  • Plan and direct training programs and evaluate the results of training activity Design and direct the development of air attack base facilities required by CAL FIRE 
  • Draft plans and specifications for aircraft modification to meet specific needs
