Bill Snyder was appointed deputy director for resource management in May of 2003. Snyder oversees the department's forest practice, environmental protection, and resource protection program areas. These program areas provide statewide support to timber harvest plan review and enforcement, state demonstration forests, forestry assistance, state nurseries, vegetation management and California Environmental Quality Act reviews.

Prior to this appointment, Snyder held the position of deputy chief for forest practice managing the north coast region harvest plan review processes and forest practice rule interpretation and implementation. He started with CAL FIRE as a seasonal firefighter stationed at Smith Creek Forest Fire Station in 1969 and 1970 and a limited term engineer stationed at the San Antone Forest Fire Station in 1971. The summer of 1972 was spent as a forestry aide on the Jackson Demonstration State Forest.

Upon graduation in 1973 he went to work for Pickering Lumber Company in Tuolumne County where he worked for the next 23 years in applied forest management on a 70,000 acre tract of timberland. From 1996 through 1998 he was the chief forester and regeneration forester for Georgia-Pacific's Martell and Fort Bragg tracts respectively. From 1995 through 1998 he served on the California State Board of Forestry and Fire Protection and in 1998 left the Board to return to the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection as a forester in the Amador-El Dorado Unit. He is a registered professional forester holding license number 1760.
