*** November 6, 2015 - Due to extreme damage from the Valley Fire, Boggs Mountain Demonstration Forest is closed to the public. All road and trail use as well as camping is closed due to the dangerous conditions that are present, as well as the salvage logging which will be occurring. We will update the public as conditions warrant. ***
CAL FIRE acquired this forest from a private landowner in 1949. At that time, most of the merchantable timber on the Forest had already been harvested. Boggs Mountain
Demonstration State Forest is located in southern Lake County, seven miles northwest of Middletown and eight miles south of Clear Lake. It lies approximately 50 miles inland from the Pacific shoreline and 75 air miles north of San Francisco. The Forest consists of gently rolling terrain bordered by two mountain peaks, one at the north end and one at the south end. Geologically, Boggs Mountain is complex, with various types of volcanic rock exposed over much of its nearly 3,500 acres.
Vegetation at the lower elevations consists of chaparral with manzanita being most predominant. Upper elevations host a mixed conifer forest of mostly coast range Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine and sugar pine. Hardwood species include canyon live oak, black oak, dogwood and madrone.
The forest is open year-round for public recreation and is frequently used for camping, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. There are 22 miles of unimproved roads and more than 14 miles of non-motorized use trails that cover a variety of terrain including meadows, ridge tops, and dense forests. Campsites consist of tables and fire rings with one pit toilet at Calso Camp. No water is available at camp and picnic areas. Camping, campfires and use of gas stoves are limited to Calso and Ridge camps.
Hunting is permitted under applicable State game laws and regulations. Pets are welcome but must be leashed and controlled. Horses are allowed in camp only with a special use permit issued by a forest officer.
