State Nurseries
Seedlings are available to the general public and conservation groups for reforestation, erosion control, watershed protection, windbreaks, Christmas trees, fuel wood, and approved research projects. Although CAL FIRE has curtailed its nursery operations since 2004 due to budget constraints, our nursery program is still growing quality seedlings. Bareroot and container grown seedlings will be available from the Magalia Reforestation Center in Butte County. The cone processing center and the seed bank continue to operate at the L. A. Moran Reforestation Center in Yolo County and plans are being developed to reestablish the container nursery operations at this site.
With the assistance of federal grant funding and federal cone collection teams, the CAL FIRE nursery program continues to expand the availability of seedlings suitable for reforestation of the Southern California areas damaged by insects and wildfire. Contracts for growing seedlings are available for quantities of 5000 seedlings or more. CAL FIRE's sowing decisions are based on input from the department's resource management staff and customer requests. Contact the nursery staff to inform them of your future reforestation needs. Please include information on the desired species, planting locale, and site elevation. For feedback, questions, and sowing requests, please contact the nursery staff at or call the Magalia Reforestation Center at (530) 872-6301.
