Current Situation

Situation Summary

Current Conditions:

Dixie Fire West Zone:
Fire continues to move  towards control lines burning unburned interior islands and ridges as planned. Decreasing clouds overnight as monsoon moisture pushed east of the region. Evening southwest winds will ease east after sunset with nighttime northeast downcanyon winds developing. Today, southwest winds will keep the threat of thunderstorms to the east of the fire area. Less smoke should allow the inversion to lift earlier for the west zone. Fire crews continue to construct and reinforce control lines, protect structures, fall trees that threaten containment efforts, and provide structure defense in communities at risk. Damage Inspection teams will continue their assessments of critical infrastructure and key resources.

Dixie Fire East Zone: Yesterday on the East Zone, the active fire became more visible to surrounding communities. Late afternoon storms brought erratic outflow winds which tested the containment lines. The winds also helped burn interior pockets of historically dry brush and grass reducing the chance of the fire spotting over the control line. In the Red Hill area, where the fire pushed westward Thursday firefighters are working to prevent any further movement to the north. Crews continued to strengthen fireline protecting cabins and remove unburned fuel north of State Route 70. In Meadow Valley, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) overnight continued the
tactical aerial ignition on Burton Ridge for a slow, low intensity firing operation. On the ground, hand crews strategically directed fire downslope along a grid system to remove grass and understory brush in a mosaic pattern that will preserve timber to help future erosion control. In the Bucks Lake Wilderness, handline along the Pacific Crest Trail has closed the mouth of the pocket, which will narrow, as the fire burns in on itself. The Evans Fire has intensified in rugged terrain in Indian Valley within the
Fire scar. Overnight, UAS were used to ignite the tall brush, heavy logs and dead trees, which are burning at high temperatures and challenging wildland firefighting efforts. There are currently 187 firefighters assigned to the 70-acre fire.
