Incident Update Dixie Fire

Situation Summary

Dixie Fire West Zone:

The fire is still very active from the Lassen Volcanic National Park burning to the Pacific Coast Trail and up to the Hat Creek drainage where it is tied into Badger Flats. This area of the fire is expected to slowly burn into itself tonight. Erratic winds occurred today causing SR 44 to be closed between A-21 and Old Station. Crews will continue to fight fire aggressively as the wind event is predicted to continue into the evening.

Operations will concentrate on structure protection, mopping up areas of probable concern, strengthening existing control lines, and focusing on multiple contingency lines south of Janesville and Milford along HWY 395. No heat was detected by the Infrared aircraft along HWY 70 going up to Butte Meadows where mop-up is nearly completed. Crews are currently in patrol status along HWY 32, 36, and 89 where hose is being removed. Humidity recovery overnight will remain poor.

Northern California remains under a Fuels and Fire Advisory. Active fire behavior is due to hot and dry weather.

Several evacuation orders have been reduced to warnings and many warnings have been lifted allowing some residents to return to their homes and businesses. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and to monitor evacuation information and road closures, including social media and local law enforcement websites for the most current information.

Residents will see smoke coming from trees and stumps for days following their return. Proceed with caution because burned-out areas may have unseen hazards. Residents are encouraged to call 911 if they are concerned about any active flames near their homes or businesses. Damage assessment remains ongoing. The change in the count of threatened structures in the update is due to new Evacuation Warnings in Lassen, Plumas, and Shasta County.

*A firefighter assigned to the Dixie incident passed away on September 2, due to an illness.

Dixie Fire East Zone:

Crews are assessing structure losses on the north side of Dixie Valley, and the southeast corner of the fire continues to burn actively. Firefighters face many challenges including very steep rocky terrain, dry, hot, and breezy weather, and extremely dry receptive fuels.

Today, ground crews, supported by 14 helicopters, 6 scoopers, and 2 VLATs, strengthened containment lines, searched for spot fires around structures, and used water to extinguish spots and cool down hot areas. Hand crews and heavy equipment built direct lines along the fire’s edge on Horton Ridge as well as building a contingency line south of the ridge. Crews also built a contingency line along the powerline running adjacent to the west side of Horton Ridge and along Beckwourth/Milford Highway. Structure protection crews remained active and engaged in Dixie Valley and Grizzly Heights.

East and West Zone crews reinforced the line around the 40-acre spot fire that jumped over the containment line yesterday near Squaw Peak. Coordinated resources continue to defend the containment line at the base of the escarpment above Highway 395. Much of the fire north of Dixie Valley in the Dixie Mountain State Game Refuge has burned into the Sugar Fire scar. Containment lines in the Coyote Hills, Turner Ridge, and Grizzly Ridge are holding in place and mostly cold, as crews continue to use water to secure and reinforce lines and cool interior hot spots. South of Taylorsville, crews continue to observe moderate fire behavior in the Devils Punchbowl and keep it cool with helicopter water drops as they reinforce containment lines and seek out opportunities to go direct. Crews continue to mop up hot spots with water near structures in Genesee Valley, progressing farther and farther from the structures into the fire interior.

National Forest Closures

The Pacific Southwest Region is temporarily closing all R5 National Forests to provide better public and firefighter safety due to extreme fire conditions throughout the state and strained firefighting resources throughout the country. This closure will be effective on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. through September 17, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. This Order does not affect the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, which is not in the Pacific Southwest Region. The Lassen National Forest's Order No. 06-21-08: Expanded Dixie Fire Closure Order prohibits the public from entering within the Dixie Fire Closure Area or any National Forest System Roads or trails described in Exhibits A & B. The Plumas National Forest’s Order No. 05-11-00-21-21: Dixie Fire Phases 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Expanded Closure Order prohibits the public from entering within the Dixie Fire Closure Area or any National Forest System road or trail described in Exhibit A and B.

Bureau of Land Management

The Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail near Susanville, as the Bureau of Land Management, has rescinded a temporary emergency closure associated with the Dixie Fire. Also reopened are the Hobo Camp and Devil’s Corral trailheads and all other BLM-managed lands that were affected by the emergency closure that went into effect on Aug. 16. This includes BLM-managed lands south of California Highway 36, west of U. S. 395. and north and east of the Lassen National Forest boundary.

Evacuee Campsites:

Lassen National Forest: The Lassen National Forest has the Christine Campground on Eagle Lake Ranger District and the Bridge Campground on the Hat Creek Ranger District available for evacuees. Evacuee's primary residence must be under mandatory evacuation and need to check in with the campsite's hosts. Before you go, make sure the campgrounds are not under any evacuation warnings. Plumas Evacuee Campsites: Plumas National Forest - Campgrounds available to evacuees include Meadow Camp, Rock Creek, and Deanes Valley Campgrounds in the Meadow Valley area, in addition to Red Bridge Campground off La Porte Road, and Lakes Basin Campground off of Gold Lake Highway.
