Current Situation

Situation Summary

Current Situation:

Fire crews that were previously working near Helena have been utilized for a new fire start (Knob Fire) south of Willow Creek. Containment line from the Junction
City area to Maxwell Creek is holding well and firefighters are continuing to patrol. Fuels are critically dry and receptive to ignition; near Maxwell Creek the fire spotted over the fire line and crews were successful in its containment. Pockets of heat are still present along the fire perimeter in the Barker Creek Road area; crews
are identifying these pockets and continuing with mop-up operations. Firefighters west of Barker Creek to Cedar Gulch are improving containment lines and mopping up. North of Hyampom Road to Little Creek and Sims Gap, fire line construction to the west is being secured and strengthened. The contingency line from Hyampom Road to Tule Creek Road is near completion.

Northern California has experienced large fire activity and will likely experience an extended fire season. Fires burning in northern California are exhibiting extreme fire growth based on critical fuel conditions. The prioritization of resources is always based on life, property, and natural resources. Under these drought conditions, wildfires are burning rapidly with extreme severity and have traveled up to 8 miles in a single day. Fire spread is fuel driven and does not depend on wind speed, as we have seen in previous years. Firefighters are experiencing conditions never seen before, such as increased rates of spread, spotting and active nighttime burning. We coordinate very closely with the US Forest Service and CalOES for our local and out of state partners, to ensure resources are shared.
