Incident UpdateMonument Fire
Date: 08/27/2021 Time: 6:58 PM
Today, crews from the South Zone assisted the North Zone to secure the fire line north of the Helena area. The fire perimeter from the Zone break, near Coopers
Bar, down to Maxwell creek is holding. Crews continue to secure the line and mopup adjacent to the Zone Break by Coopers Bar. Firefighters are constructing direct line to contain fire that breached the fire perimeter several days ago in the Maxwell Creek area. Steep terrain and rolling material have hampered containment efforts. Fire crews are constructing direct line on the spot fire, near Garden Gulch Lane, and the fire perimeter between Barker Creek Road (Barker fire scar) and the Carter Road area (north of Hayfork) is holding well. Crews are working hard to secure the fire line in the Cedar Gulch area; construction of direct fire line and mop-up continue as dozers worked to complete the contingency line in the Sims Gap area. Contingency line construction will resume from the southwest side of the fire to Tule Creek Road to protect the community of Hayfork.
Northern California has experienced large fire activity and will likely experience an extended fire season. Fires burning in northern California are exhibiting extreme fire growth based on critical fuel conditions. The prioritization of resources is always based on life, property, and natural resources. Under these drought conditions, wildfires are burning rapidly with extreme severity and have traveled up to 8 miles in a single day. Fire spread is fuel driven and does not depend on wind speed, as we have seen in previous years. Firefighters are experiencing conditions never seen before, such as increased rates of spread, spotting and active nighttime burning. We coordinate very closely with the US Forest Service and CalOES for our local and out of state partners, to ensure resources are shared.
Community Meetings: A virtual community meeting will be held at 6:00 P.M. tomorrow, August 28. The meeting will be live streamed on the CAL FIRE Shasta-Trinity Unit Facebook page, CAL FIRE IMT 5’s YouTube channel and Shasta Trinity National Forest Facebook page.
