Seasonal Outlook
Northern CaliforniaNorthern California is expected to transition into wetter conditions through February 2027, with seasonal rainfall, higher-elevation snowfall, and improving fuel moisture reducing wildfire potential. Recent precipitation has helped moderate fire danger, while continued rainfall and vegetation green-up are expected to further limit significant wildfire activity. Overall, significant fire potential is forecast to remain near normal for the winter season, with very little large-fire activity anticipated.
Southern California
Southern California is expected to experience cooler-than-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation through February 2027, with the potential for an exceptionally wet winter associated with a strong El Niño. Fewer offshore wind events are anticipated, and recent rainfall has already improved fuel moisture and reduced vegetation flammability. Significant wildfire potential is expected to remain low throughout the outlook period.
Drought
Drought conditions continue to improve across California as the state enters its wet season. Moderate drought persists in portions of Northern California and isolated desert areas of Southern California, although recent rainfall has improved soil moisture and vegetation conditions. Above-normal winter precipitation is expected to support further drought recovery and reduce the likelihood of drought expansion statewide.
