CAL FIRE 2019 to 2026 Achievements
CAL FIRE is modernizing its world-leading aerial firefighting fleet with new FIREHAWK helicopters, expanded nighttime firefighting and rescue capabilities, advanced simulation training, and C-130 Hercules airtankers, with four of seven airtankers now operational.
A Modernized Firefighting Helicopter Fleet
- World-leading fleet: CAL FIRE operates 17 FIREHAWK helicopters, the world’s largest dedicated FIREHAWK fleet, completing a five-year statewide transition in 2025.
- Enhanced capabilities: FIREHAWKS improve performance and safety while supporting nighttime firefighting and emergency rescues.
- Expanded night operations: CAL FIRE logged more than 980+ hours of nighttime aviation operations in 2026.
- Advanced training: Augmented reality and helicopter hoist simulators help crews practice emergency procedures in a safe, controlled environment.
Increasing Statewide Capacity with the C-130 Airtanker
- Expanded airtanker fleet: in 2018, California secured seven C-130H Hercules aircraft for CAL FIRE through a federal partnership, strengthening the state’s aerial firefighting capabilities.
- Modernization underway: Five of the seven aircraft are operational, with a sixth expected in early 2027.
- Firefighting impact: CAL FIRE’s C-130 airtankers have dropped more than 1.5 million gallons of fire retardant in 2026.
