Aviation Program

The CAL FIRE Aviation Program operates the world’s largest aerial firefighting fleet, serving as a cornerstone of California’s all-hazards emergency response system. Grounded in a rigorous "safety first" culture, we provide aggressive, highly effective aerial support to safeguard lives, property, and natural resources.

With over 70 fixed and rotary wing aircraft strategically positioned across one air tanker base, 13 air attack bases, and 11 helitack bases, we can reach the most remote State Responsibility Area (SRA) fires in approximately 20 minutes. This rapid response drives our core objective of keeping 95% of all fires at 10 acres or less.

Our diverse fleet includes Grumman S-2T and C-130 Hercules airtankers, Sikorsky S-70i FIREHAWK® helicopters, OV-10 Bronco tactical aircraft, King Air A200 training and intelligence platforms, and Bell UH-1H Super Hueys. By integrating uncrewed aerial systems (UAS), advanced avionics, and real-time data analysis, we maximize situational awareness and tactical effectiveness.
